Alan Wilder feels some of the clarity of opinion was lost during the making of the darkly ambient Black Celebration: ‘When too many additional voices were brought into the equation, problems seemed to arise. I hadn’t immediately had a lot of power in the group, it took a long period of time. He just gradually started letting go over the course of these albums. It was probably quite conscious on his part, to allow us to take a more active role as we became more experienced.
